Nonlinear Dynamics
Nonlinear dynamics examines how states evolve under nonlinear equations, such as a pendulum equation containing sin(θ). A nonlinear equation does not by itself imply chaotic motion.
Overview
For an ideal unforced, undamped pendulum, θ̈=−(g/l)sin(θ). Near the downward equilibrium, replacing sin(θ) by θ gives a linear approximation; at larger angles this approximation loses accuracy. In contrast to a homogeneous linear equation, adding or scaling solutions does not generally produce another solution of the nonlinear equation.
Why it matters
Parameter changes can alter a model’s qualitative behavior. In the scalar example ẋ=−x+tanh(wx), crossing w=1 creates two additional equilibria and changes the stability of x=0. This lets analysis address changes in the structure of trajectories, beyond extrapolating one trajectory.
