Stem Cells
Stem cells are cells capable of self-renewal and differentiation into more specialized cell types. Their functional capacity depends on cell type and microenvironmental conditions, without guaranteeing unlimited renewal across all lineages.
Overview
Depending on origin and developmental potency, stem cells include totipotent cells, pluripotent embryonic stem cells, and lineage-restricted multipotent adult stem cells. The discovery that somatic cells can be reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) demonstrated cellular plasticity and introduced non-embryonic pluripotent sources. The biological study of these properties constitutes the field of stem-cell biology.
Why it matters
Stem cells are studied extensively in regenerative medicine for their capacity to generate replacement tissues for degenerative conditions. In oncology, identification of cancer stem cell subpopulations has informed models of disease progression and treatment response.
