Statistics
Statistics is the study and practice of learning from data while accounting for and communicating uncertainty.
Overview
Exploratory analysis examines patterns and anomalies and helps assess assumptions before a model is adopted. Statistical inference uses probability models to reason from observed data. Mathematical calculations alone cannot establish that a sampling process or measuring instrument captured the intended quantity.
Why it matters
In clinical research, random assignment supports comparisons between treatment groups. Survival analysis studies time to an event while accounting for censoring. These methods address different parts of a study; credible conclusions also depend on its design, follow-up and risk of bias.
