Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton (1643–1727) was an English natural philosopher, mathematician, and physicist who formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation. He also developed calculus independently alongside Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and established mathematical methods for classical mechanics.
Why it matters
Newton's Principia provided a mathematical foundation for classical mechanics by uniting terrestrial and celestial motions under common physical laws. His formulations served as the dominant quantitative framework in physics and astronomy until twentieth-century developments.
